Julia Jay is a full-time Australian artist specialising in intricate pen and watercolour artworks inspired by nature, stories, fairies and magical creatures. Her drawings are filled with tiny details and unexpected discoveries, creating miniature worlds that reward a second look.
For Julia, drawing has always been much more than simply making pictures. It has been a creative outlet for an active imagination and something she describes as soothing to her soul.
Inspired by Nature, Stories and a Little Magic
Nature plays a significant role in Julia's work, but her pieces venture well beyond conventional botanical or wildlife art.
Kookaburras, water dragons, lions, butterflies, forests, flowers, moons, mermaids and fantastical creatures inhabit her collection. Many of the artworks have stories of their own, with hidden words, poems and characters sometimes tucked amongst the intricate details.
That storytelling element gives Julia's work its distinctive personality.
Her pieces can feel whimsical at first glance, but look closer and there is often another layer waiting to be discovered, an idea, emotion or story woven into the artwork.
Art Created Entirely by Hand
In an increasingly digital world, Julia remains very much a hands-on artist.
Her original works are hand-drawn and painted rather than digitally created. Fine waterproof pens allow her to build extraordinarily detailed illustrations before introducing watercolour and, more recently, gouache. That level of detail requires considerable patience.
Julia says some of her A3 black-and-white works have taken around 20 to 30 hours to complete, while detailed pen and watercolour pieces can take 50 to 60 hours. More complex works can evolve over months.
One particularly ambitious artwork, Aunty Ula the Water Dragon, developed over approximately a year and a half. The finished work depicts an ancient earth guide connected with water, the earth and the idea of restoring magic to our lives.
Taking Art on the Road
Julia's creative life isn't confined to a studio.
She sells her work at markets, festivals and pop-up shops and enjoys travelling with her art, combining local events with trips further afield.
For Julia, these markets provide something beyond simply selling her work. They give her the opportunity to meet people, experience different communities and, importantly, hear their stories.
That human connection appears to fit naturally with an artist whose work is so strongly influenced by storytelling.
Sharing Creativity Through Workshops
Julia also shares her techniques through drawing and watercolour workshops.
Her classes introduce participants to the pen and watercolour techniques she uses in her own work and are designed to encourage people to explore their creativity regardless of their previous artistic experience.
For those unable to attend a workshop in person, Julia has also created an online drawing bundle featuring 13 drawing lessons, a workbook and drawing materials. Subjects include magical toadstools, crescent moons, ferns, flowers and the tiny creatures and flourishes that characterise her own work.
Bringing Julia Jay Art Home
Julia's original creations have also found their way into a range of accessible art products.
Her collection includes art prints, greeting cards and colouring books, with the colouring books continuing the fantastical theme through worlds of fairies, toadstools and spirit animals.
