I have visited Billabong Zoo Port Macquarie a number of times, and it always delights me to watch the beautiful animals and birds.

Billabong Zoo Koala Breeding Program

Billabong Zoo, known for its koala breeding program, plays a crucial role in enhancing koala populations across Australia by providing genetically strong bloodlines to zoos and sanctuaries in NSW, Victoria, and Queensland. The zoo houses up to 20 koalas at a time, each cared for meticulously by dedicated staff. I had the privilege of patting one of these gentle creatures, marvelling at its bond with its caretaker. You can even adopt a koala.
Penguins at Play
Among my favourite encounters are the penguins. Having previously visited the Sydney Aquarium, I was thrilled to get close to these charming creatures at Billabong Zoo.

Over 220 animals at Billabong Zoo
Established in 1986 as a koala breeding centre, Billabong Zoo has expanded to become a renowned regional zoo in Port Macquarie.. Beyond its koalas, it showcases over 80 species and cares for more than 220 animals. Voted the region’s Top Attraction multiple times, the zoo boasts a diverse collection of Australian and exotic wildlife, including meerkats, crocodiles, and a variety of birds.
Exploring the Zoo
Exploring the zoo, I found its natural setting and spacious enclosures particularly inviting. From open pens with playful birds to informative feeding sessions with kangaroos and wallabies, Billabong Zoo offers an immersive wildlife experience.
I am always captivated by the zoo’s serene atmosphere and the opportunity to observe animals in such close proximity. The lions, in particular, left a lasting impression as I stood just metres away from their enclosure.
