Urunga Boardwalk NSW – A Beautiful Coastal Walk on the Coffs Coast

The Urunga Boardwalk on the NSW Mid North Coast is one of the most beautiful coastal walks I've experienced. Situated on Morgo Street in the charming seaside village of Urunga, this spectacular boardwalk offers breathtaking views across the Kalang and Bellinger rivers, surrounding wetlands and the Pacific Ocean.
I have walked many boardwalks, but this one remains a favourite!
From the moment I first set eyes on the Urunga Boardwalk, I couldn't wait to start walking and discover what was at the other end.
Whether you're travelling along the NSW Mid North coast, staying in the Coffs Harbour region or simply looking for somewhere peaceful to enjoy nature, Urunga Boardwalk deserves a place on your itinerary.
Walking the Urunga Boardwalk
The original boardwalk extended for approximately one kilometre from Urunga towards the ocean, following the banks of the Kalang River to its junction with the Bellinger River.
The scenery is absolutely stunning. Looking inland, you can see towards the Great Dividing Range, while the surrounding waterways, mangroves and coastal landscape create a wonderful natural setting.
Allow approximately 30–45 minutes for a leisurely return walk, depending on how often you stop to admire the scenery and take photographs. I must admit I'm a fast walker, so it took me considerably less time!
Along the way, keep an eye out for native birdlife and marine animals. Pelicans, herons and other waterbirds frequent the estuary, and you may even be lucky enough to spot dolphins in the water.
There are plenty of opportunities to appreciate the views, and it's a particularly lovely location for photography.
The much-loved Urunga Boardwalk has been undergoing a major $6.1 million replacement project, designed to improve accessibility, safety and the long-term durability of this popular coastal attraction.
Construction began in 2025, with the original structure being replaced by a wider, more modern boardwalk using durable materials designed to withstand the coastal environment.
The improvements include:
A wider walking surface, measuring approximately 2.5 to 3 metres
New viewing platforms and seating areas
Improved access for wheelchair users and people with limited mobility
Durable, non-slip decking
New structural supports designed for long-term use
As of October 2026, more than 800 metres of the new boardwalk has reopened, including viewing areas and the southern arm. The final stage of construction is expected to be completed in late 2026.
Some temporary closures may still occur while work continues, so it's worth checking the latest updates from Bellingen Shire Council before visiting.
Is Urunga Boardwalk Wheelchair Accessible?
Accessibility has been a major consideration in the boardwalk's redevelopment.
The new structure is wider, with improved surfaces and viewing areas designed to make the experience more comfortable for wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility.
The boardwalk is generally flat, making it an appealing outing for families, older visitors and people who prefer a gentle coastal walk.
However, access to particular sections may change during the remaining construction work.
Wildlife and Beautiful River Views
One of the things I love most about Urunga Boardwalk is the variety of scenery along the way.
The boardwalk follows the river through an environment rich in coastal vegetation, tidal waterways and wildlife.
Depending on the time of day, you might see pelicans resting near the water, herons searching for food or fish moving through the shallows.
The views change as you walk, from peaceful river scenery to the wide-open coastal landscape where the rivers meet the ocean.
It's a wonderful reminder of just how beautiful this part of the NSW North Coast really is.
Can You Take Your Dog on Urunga Boardwalk?
Urunga is a lovely destination for visitors travelling with dogs.
Dogs can be walked on a leash along the boardwalk, while a designated off-leash beach area is located south of the river mouth.
Check local signage for current dog access arrangements, particularly while the boardwalk upgrade is being completed.
Where Is Urunga Boardwalk?
You'll find the Urunga Boardwalk at Morgo Street, Urunga NSW 2455, approximately 20 minutes south of Coffs Harbour.
Parking is available near the waterfront, along with public toilets, picnic facilities and places to relax.
The nearby town centre has cafés and other conveniences, making it easy to combine your walk with a coffee or lunch.
Visit the Beautiful Urunga Wetlands
Another wonderful place to explore while visiting Urunga is the Urunga Wetlands.
Located on Hillside Drive, the wetlands offer a peaceful 450-metre walking loop, including a raised boardwalk overlooking ponds filled with waterlilies.
The wetlands have a fascinating environmental history, having been transformed from a heavily contaminated industrial site into a thriving habitat for native birds and other wildlife.
It's a lovely contrast to the coastal scenery of Urunga Boardwalk, and I highly recommend visiting both attractions.
