Updated: Jun 3

Updated June 2025

When visiting Forster, Cape Hawke Lookout is a must-visit spot. However, be prepared for a bit of a workout, as you'll need some fitness to tackle the 450-metre climb up the steps and slope. Fortunately, there are rest stops with seating along the way.

Be Aware of the Mozzies at Cape Hawke Lookout

During the summer, watch out for mosquitoes, especially after rain, as they can be quite aggressive, so bring insect repellent. Rest assured, the view from the top of Cape Hawke Lookout is well worth the effort and any encounters with mosquitoes.

Littoral Rainforest and Birds

It takes around 420 steps you’ll reach an 8.4m tower with stunning views of the surrounding area. You will walk through luscious Littoral Rainforest, and likely to come across an abundance of birds such as Rainbow and scaly-breasted lorikeets, yellow-faced honeyeaters, and silvereyes.

Waterbirds such as pelicans and the endangered little tern are frequently seen. Other observed birds include Australian Brushturkeys, Brown Cuckoo-Doves, Wonga Pigeons, and Variegated Fairywrens. Some of the more commonly spotted birds are the Pied Butcherbird, Fan-tailed Cuckoo, and Maned Duck. Birdwatching is excellent throughout the year, with pelicans and terns being particularly abundant.

At the top of the lookout you will be able to see Booti Booti to the south, and Wallingat National Park beyond and slightly to the west. On a clear day you can also see Barrington Tops and Crowdy Bay National Park. In winter you may even see whales migrating.

Needless to say, don't climb the tower in a thunderstorm or you may never be coming back down.

Cape Hawke Lookout is just a five minute trip from Forster. The road up to the Lookout carpark is very steep and on the way back down you will see spectacular views. The drive up to Cape Hawke Lookout is quite surprising; it's almost rural with beautiful land and houses.
